Kathmandu, November 14th 2016 : The 548th Guru Nanak Jayanti, or Gurpurab, birth of the first Sikh guru and founder of Sikhism, is being marked amidst various programmes today.
Guru Nanank was born on April 15, 1469, into a Bedi Kshatriya family in Rai Bhoi di Talwandi village, which now falls in the Shekhupura district of Pakistan, known as Nankana Sahib.
Different religious programmes and feasts have been organized at Balaju based Nanak Gurudwara in the capital.
There are six gurudwaras in Kathmandu valley and about 7,000 followers across the country.
It is celebrated according to the lunar calendar, on the Karthik Purnima, which has fallen on November 14 this year.
Followers pay respect to the guru by reading out from the sacred book, Guru Granth Sahib, and offering their prayers.
According to Guru Nanak Service Foundation Research Centre chair Jaspal Singh, Guru Nanak had on foot visited Nepal, India, Afghanistan, Bhutan, and Mecca and Medina to spread the message of peace.
